The Duty to Consult is a legal obligation of the Crown (federal and provincial governments). It is intended to occur with Indigenous communities whenever the Crown is considering any decision that could have an impact on Aboriginal and Treaty rights, including Aboriginal title. The St. Mary’s First Nation Resource Development Consultation Coordinator (RDCC) meets with government and proponents to learn about what projects are happening in Wolastoqey territory, communicates with the community and leadership on those matters, and relays concerns back to government and companies. Ultimately, the goal of the RDCC is to help preserve the meaningful practise of Wolastoqey Aboriginal and Treaty rights.
